Vocal nodules are benign growths on the vocal folds that form as a result of repetitive traumatic collision between the vocal folds. The cause of vocal nodules is most often associated with excessive muscular tension especially in combination with excessive talking, speaking loudly, singing, crying and yelling. Overtime, the damage caused by the forceful collision leads to thickening of tissue and creation of bumps, usually in the middle of each vocal fold edge. The formation of nodules is akin to calluses that develop on areas of skin which have been subjected to friction.
Nodules are frequently diagnosed and are the most common cause of voice difficulty in childhood. The incidence of nodules is also related to occupational and/or recreational activities that involve high voice use. People at particular risk include: teachers, singers, lawyers, preachers, salespeople and call centre workers.
Treatment
Voice therapy is the first line treatment approach for nodules. In the majority of cases, voice therapy leads to complete or significant resolution of nodules and return of normal voice. In severe cases, surgery performed by an Ear Nose and Throat Surgeon may be required. Pre- and post-operative voice therapy is recommended for individuals who undergo surgical removal.
