A sulcus vocalis is a groove in the vocal fold that affects vocal fold vibration and allows excess air to escape during voicing. It is thought to develop from factors including laryngeal infections, poor healing of old lesions, vocal overuse, or traumatic injury. It’s development can also be congenital.
