A granuloma is a benign inflammatory mass lesion that develops as result of injury or irritation to either one or both vocal folds. The formation of granulomas has been linked to factors such as reflux, intubation and traumatic vocal behaviour such as using the voice with excessive muscular force and chronic throat clearing.
Treatment
Management options for granulomas include voice therapy with medical or surgical treatment. Surgery is usually required when non-surgical management is unsuccessful or when a granuloma causes airway obstruction. Following surgery, voice therapy is recommended to enhance healing, establish correct voicing technique and reduce the risk of recurrence. Voice therapy may be effective as a single treatment approach in some cases.
